Low Levels of Complement Factor C4 Not Always Implicate Disease Activity in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
نویسندگان
چکیده
A lupus patient with a clinically quiescent disease stage will be described who had severely depressed C4 levels while levels of C3 en CH50 were normal. Additional testing revealed a homozygous C4A isotype deficiency as the cause of the very low C4 levels. It should be emphasized that in SLE, a (very) low C4 level does not always means (subclinical) disease activity.

A review on the latest clinical and laboratory criteria for clinical diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with various organs involvement which early diagnosis of disease is critical for successful treatment. The subjects with the possibility of SLE who visit by physician, their full medical history and specific immunological tests should investigate precisely in order to subsequently asses their hematological and renal parameters t...
متن کاملارتباط فعالیت بیماری لوپوس اریتماتوز سیستمیک (SLE) با فعالیت مسیر کلاسیک کمپلمان (CH50)
Background: The components of the classical complement pathway play an important role in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and are reportedly useful biomarkers of disease activity. In this study, we evaluate disease activity, complement function (total hemolytic complement, CH50) and complement protein levels (C3, C4, C3d, C4d, SC5b-9), comparing the results of patients wit...
متن کاملThree cases of systemic lupus erythematosus and review of the mechanisms concerning treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG).
The systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder with a broad array of clinical signs. In this research, we aimed to use intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) called intacglobin as monotherapy to manage an SLE in three patients. Laboratory investigations for SLE diagnosis were done, including the detection of anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) and SLE confirmation by detecting high tite...
متن کاملCorrelation of the activation of the fourth component of complement (C4) with disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus.
Levels of C4d, a fragment of C4 generated during activation of the classical complement pathway, were measured in the plasma of 48 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, 11 with inactive (group 1), 23 with mildly active (group 2), 14 with moderately/severely active disease (group 3), and 30 healthy subjects. Levels of C3d, C4, and C3 were also measured and the C4d/C4 and C3d/C3 ratios calc...
متن کاملRatio of Th17/Treg and Disease Activity in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by T-cells imbalance. There are ongoing controversies about the role of specific T-helper cell subsets and their cytokines. The study aimed to confirm the disturbance of Th17/Treg ratio in SLE patients. Methods: Subjects were SLE patients who met the American College of Rheumatology 1997 criteria. Dis...
